A career in the Sky

The Australian

With just a little more training, people with a degree can take their career to a new level.

The Royal Australian Air Force is looking for skilled professionals - ranging from engineers to nurses to teachers - to undertake graduate officer training.

After eight years as a high school teacher, Jo Hanson, 29, of Blair Athol, decided to join the Air Force as an education officer.

``Following the completion of a bachelor of education, a masters of education and eight years of teaching, I decided it was time for the next challenge in my career,'' she says.

``This position has ultimately allowed me to advise and help others, learn from colleagues and peers, challenge myself, develop essential leadership qualities and build on improving skills and experience in my chosen profession"

``As an expert on the RAAF training systems, I am now working in a small team implementing recommendations from a report into Australian Defence Force schools and training establishments"

``This program aims to enhance the ADF learning structures and our goals towards an optimal learning culture.'' she says

Flt-Lt Hanson says a defence force career presents diverse roles and environments, new people and national and international travel.

She also has developed leadership skills and completed the masters of education.

``For me, the constant drive to challenge myself professionally and personally, to experience different roles, travel with work and learn from those around me, have all been integral in making my experience in the air force an amazing one,'' she says.

When first entering the RAAF, an initial 16-week officer-training course is held at RAAF Base East Sale, in eastern Victoria.

New recruits undergo theory and practical training, including a focus on air force values and attitudes, personal development, organisation, management, communication and the development of specific military skills.

After training, successful officers will have the opportunity to specialise in their chosen field.
